Rickenbacker copy -new 420 (£420)

Date posted: Thursday 12th November

A few weeks old, only played twice - literally new condition....!
Classic 60's styling with this superb trimmed down Rickenbackers famous 4003 bass guitar copy.
Complete with a large white scratchplate, abalone triangular neck inlays and great sounding pickups.
It's a great bass to play, the neck is lovely, the pickups have good clarity, great for all from rock 'n' roll to punk, and the looks are just to die for.
The long, curvy headstock has a gloss black finish to the front and back, the end has a vavy finish, whilst the sides taper inwards, so it's narrower at the the far end.
The front has a large, bright white truss rod cover. The 4 machineheads are 2-a-side, slightly offset to increase string tension on the bass side. These are chrome die-cast style with small, T-shaped knobs, and they work perfectly well.
The hard maple neck is a beauty, a gloss black paint job to the back, it has a modern D-profile, feeling pretty slim.
The rosewood fingerboard is fully bound in cream plastic, with those distincitive looking triangular white abalone inlays.

Fretwork is to a high standard, nice and high, well polished up and no rough edges. The rosewood itself is also nicely finished, an excellent grain, good and dark, nicely polished up giving a smooth, waxy feel. This all makes for a very enjoyable guitar to play.
Newly set-up, this guitar has an action at the 12th fret of about 4mm across the curved fingerboard. Top nut width is 43mm and overall scale length is some 880mm.
The neck is set in on this model, aiding sustain and generally improving the sound. The neck joins the ash body at the top 20th fret on both side, slightly lower though on the bass side. The bodies has an elongated upper horn, with a chrome straphook on the tip, aiding balance giving another bit of eye-catching appearance.
The body is also fairly angular, giving an almost quirky look, who knows what the guys at Rickenbacker were smoking when they came up with this great design...
The body is completely finished in a mirrored, piano gloss black, with the top bound in cream plastic. The back is totally plain, no plates to access the electrics here, that's all done from the front if necessary.
The large, bright white scratchplate extends from underneath the neck pickup, across and down the lower bout taking in all 4 controls, 2 volume and 2 tones, 1 for each pickup, and the 3 way selector switch (plus 1 kill switch).
The neck pickup is enclosed by the scratchplate, whereas the bridge pickup has a smart chrome plate surrounding it. Both are vintage style single coils, height adjustable, chrome with black plastic tape on the top in an 'H' shape, they look pretty good. Sounds range from fairly soft and mellow, at the neck to bright and punchy at the neck pickup, great for a bit of jazz, funk, blues, soul, pop and punk.
The bridge is chrome, a 4 saddle plate style, all fully adjustable as you'd expect, no fancy tailpieces on show here though, perhaps they though that might be a little too close to the original for comfort...
If you don't have a spare few grand for the original, take a look at this copy from Indie, it really is a great version of an all time classic that all bassists will totally enjoy playing.
A new one will set you back around £500.

Reluctant sale due to time constraints.
