Details regarding the Support Worker role

The client who is 32 years old sustained a spinal cord injury 4 years ago following a fall.
His disability means he has restriction in movement and weakness in his arms and legs. He is able to walk short distances with crutches but is at risk of falls and generally uses a wheelchair which he can self propel indoors. Outdoors he can require some support with his wheelchair.

To void urine he has a catheter and leg bag. He uses a suppository in the morning to assist with emptying his bowels. He has very severe spasms as a result of his spinal injury and is on a pump to control them.

Currently the client lives alone in a 1 bedroom flat. In the near future he hopes to move to a larger property in the same area. He has help from carers via a care agency. He also has a lot of support from his parents who live locally. He is now looking to recruit his own carers, who will help him in the home but also can take him out into the community.

You will be required to assist with aspects of the client’s personal care. These include supporting him with his bowel management and catheter bag, showering, shaving and getting in and out of bed.

You will also be required to support the client with running his own home to include cleaning, shopping, laundry and meal preparation. In addition your role will include supporting the client to access the community and participating in activities of interest to him. The client is interested in writing and composing music, and would like to purchase and use a computer. You will be required to drive the client in his car.
.
As a support worker with this client you will preferably have an NVQ level 2/3 in Health and Social Care, at least 1 year’s experience of working with people with disabilities and a willingness to be flexible around hours, including very occasional sleep – in shifts if the client is poorly. You may be required to go on holiday occasionally with the client. You will be expected to provide a high standard of care, and to attend training relevant to the clients care. ie. bladder and bowel management, manual handling. You will need to have excellent communication skills and the physical ability to assist the client out and about in the community. Punctuality, reliability and the importance of doing things in the way that things have been shown are important to the client, as is the need for sensitivity to his requiring his own personal space at times.

You will be provided with induction and training regarding the specific personal care needs of the client. You will also receive frequent supervision sessions to help develop your expertise with the client and maintain standards of practise.
