For the experienced singer and novice alike, this workshop is an exploration in the emotive power of the voice. Participants will be encouraged to shelve their inhibitions in a series of games and organized improvisations that treat the voice as a theatrical, as well as musical, tool. Ear training, voice-building, harmonizing, rhythmic coordination, different timbres, tonal variation, basic choral conducting signals, and other technical skills will be learnt and exercised, often disguised as amusing play in which we experiment with noises, squeals, moans, shrieks, yells, coos, sighs, and growls and getting in touch with our inner cartoon characters. The objective is not to create polished music, although beautiful pieces will sometimes emerge, but rather to overcome socially enforced fears and repressions regarding vocal expression and the limitations we impose on ourselves (and others), and justify with terms such as “shy”, “tone deaf”, or other disqualifiers. On the other side of the fence we have singers trained in a particular idiom: “classical”, “jazz”, “pop”, “spiritual”, who may have emulated it to such a degree that they are now constrained by the norms of their genre. Feeling free to go beyond various expectations of what sounds are “OK” to make, we can discover new ways of digging the genuine!
