Vieux Boucau - a large modern village
On all approaches to the Beaches, you are met with the mountainous fine white sandy dunes. (These Sand dunes were Man made in around 1840 to protect the countryside from the onslaught of the Atlantic Ocean), Vieux Boucau Plage (beach) has easy access ramps to cross the dunes, this beach has bars and ample parking. The beaches on the estuary need no climbing of the dunes. These beaches are surfing paradises.
Vieux Boucau is a large modern village, formulated around the ancient village of "Vieux Boucau les Bains" (continues to exist today as the older centre ville area, with the Church & Mairie), which was again renamed from the ancient town of Port d'Albret, before the turn of the 17th century, when it ceased to be an operating Port once the river Adour was re-routed to Bayonne in 1578.
The large natural sea fed salt water lake (with its own beaches & Island) known as the "Lac Marin de Port d'Albret", was the first port in ancient history on the Cote d'Argent, but was placed into redundancy when Capbreton (15 kms South by sea) commenced construction as a larger port in the early 1400s and 2 centuries later the grand port of Bayonne (32 kms South).
Today the lake is shared by two communes, Vieux Boucau on the North side and Soustons Plage on the South, West & East, the Lake has tidal control sluices on a dam at the estuary, which retains the maximum high water level in the Lake when the sea reaches low tide, maintaining the use of the Lake for the water sports at all times. The dam also enables people (not cars) walking or on cycles to traverse the whole lake and arrive back where they started, but this does mean that boats, motor or sailing can not enter the harbour and would have to seek sanctuary in Capbreton or Bayonne.
Tourism first arrived in Vieux Boucau in 1930 on a large scale and has grown ever since, but has still retained its Village atmosphere and size, the Town and Complex centers are buzzing with bars, cafes, restaurants etc., the "Place de Mairie" (square outside the small Town hall) has live music concerts, modern, pop, jazz and folk on stage every night from June to early September with firework displays on the 14th of July (Bastille day) and 15th of August.
Landes and the Region
The department is located in the Aquitaine region in the south west of France and covers 9,243 km2 with 318,500 inhabitants tucked along the Atlantic Ocean on the west.
Landes is a natural paradise with a haven of tranquility in the north which is sparsely populated, with a few villages and larger towns on the coast. In the south are small villages in the countryside which become more and more open and hilly. It is a fairly windy oceanic climate where it is rainy in the spring time and during the summer warm and sunny.
Agriculturally, the main cereal is maize but wheat and millet are also grown as are beans and vine. In the Chalosse sheep are numerous, and the "Landes " breed of horses is well known. Forests are chiefly composed of pines which stretch to the long sandy beaches and occupy more than half of Les Landes of which their exploitation forms the chief industry here.
Mont-de-Marsan is the capital of the department; Mont-de-Marsan, Dax, and St Sever are the most noteworthy towns. The area is also the country of the Armagnac where its famous brandy is produced . Dax is known as a major thermal spa town- a quiet, warm and peaceful town which is firmly on the tourist trail thanks to its architectural legacy.
PROPERTY FOR SALE IN LANDES
Property prices here are slightly above the national average for their categories but in a great location on or near the coast with a good climate and good accessibility from Biarritz (30 mins) or Bordeaux (1.5 hrs) airports makes for a good investment in an increasingly popular area.
